Red Star Cafe: Cairo's New Coffee House
Red Star Cafe has opened as Cairo’s first coffee house. It’s literally a house, complete with a breezy porch, a wide and welcoming indoor seating area, and a back-corner study nook. Plus, it’s the only spot in town with an espresso machine and free WiFi, and in these parts, that’s a pretty big deal.
With a counter-service menu of baked goods (flaky croissants, brownies with fun toppings, muffins) and simple grab-and-go fare (salads, yogurt parfaits, hummus cups), Red Star hits the spot, whether you’re wrangling a couple of kids or just toting a laptop.
It’s obvious from first glace that Red Star was built with love, and the owners — a husband and wife team (with four kids!) — renovated the space themselves. You can get a taste of all the work they put into it via their @redstarcafebakery Instagram story archives.
Bright red chairs on Red Star’s breezy front porch overlook Cairo’s quiet Main Street. It’s not as big as the porch at Old Factory Brewing, but maybe you should make that your next stop. A cold brew at Red Star followed by a cold beer at Old Factory sounds like a pretty good way to spend a Saturday. Add a loaded shake at Cutie’s for dessert, and you’ve covered all the beverage bases in Cairo!
My cappuccino was served with a bonus treat—a homemade madeleine. The lightly-sweet, shell-shaped, cake-like cookie is a testament to the friendliness of the owners. The best coffee shops are built for gathering with neighbors and hatching new projects, and Red Star Cafe already feels like a place where good things are bound to grow.
I love that I can bring my kids to Red Star, and I also love that it could serve as a work space. For many of us in Greene County, having high-speed internet at home just isn’t an option. As much as I enjoy being unplugged, it’s impossible for my husband to run his business and tough for me to file writing assignments when our only internet access is through iPhone hotspots (which also slow down and become unreliable after a couple of consecutive days of use).
Now, when I have to make last-minute edits on WordPress or SquareSpace, both of which tend to time-out at our place, Red Star is going to be my lifeline. Here’s to a summer that’s unplugged when you wanna be, and hooked up when you need to be.
Red Star Cafe and Bakery is located at 526 Main Street, Cairo, NY; 518-622-8411. Current hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 8am to 5pm.
