Archer's Animal Alert: Red-Legged Grasshopper
Today our 5-year-old guest blogger, Archer, returns with another animal update:
I was just sitting there and my baby sister Ramona said, "Bug. Big bug!"
And then my dad walked outside, but I didn't even know what they were doing. I just saw my dad walking outside. And then dad looked and he saw this on the deck:
It was a grasshopper! He put it in the bug catcher, but it was so big that we had to put it in another container 3 times the size of the bug catcher. And every time the grasshopper jumped, he hit the ceiling of it.
He was a big grasshopper. He was as long as a 5-year-old's longest finger. [Editor's note: As I type, Archer is holding up his middle finger at me to show me how long the grasshopper was.]
We looked it up and it was a red-legged grasshopper.
And here's the thing: I got too scared of getting to close! So you know what I did? I gave him a choice. He could sleep in the container for the night or get set free. I brought him out of the container, and then I kept the container so close to him that his antenna went right inside.
And you know which one I wanted him to do? Sleep in the container for the night!
But did he jump into the container? No! You know what he did? He jumped from the high deck to the step closest to the bottom step, all in one leap!
He looks small in this picture, but he actually was very big. And I also felt a little nervous because he was so big.
Fun Fact: There's 11,000 species of grasshopper in the world. The end.
