Desperately Seeking Sidney's Best Sea Salt Caramels
Sidney's Best bills his sea salt caramels as "The Best Caramels You'll Ever Taste -- Trust Me!" I like a bold, bragging advertisement, and I love a salted caramel, so I was really happy to spot this plate of treats tucked between some grapes and mushrooms in the fridge at Story Farms.
Guys, Sidney ain't messing around! These caramels find the perfect balance between salty and sweet. They're magically rich and pleasantly gooey, without sticking to your teeth like taffy. We let ours warm to room temperature before tasting, which I highly recommend.
As we drove home, I immediately started researching Sidney's Best to see if I could get them anywhere in Brooklyn. But Sidney's Best doesn't seem to have a website. In fact, my searches didn't pull up much besides this February 2011 story from Hudson Valley magazine. Writer Lynn Hazelwood couldn't find any info online, either:
Google turned up nothing about Sidney’s Best, but there’s a phone number on the packet. Sidney, it turns out, is what’s known as a character. He doesn’t want his last name in print, admits to living “near Woodstock,” doesn’t want to discuss how he got into the chocolate business and, when he does answer a question, immediately follows with: “But don’t write that!”
We're talking TOP-SECRET SALTED CARAMELS! So amazing. I respect this guy's privacy but if anyone knows more places where I can buy these, please share in the comments! If I can't find another dealer, I'm buying out the Story Farms supply next time I pass through Catskills. They're just too good.
