Election Tension Gets Benched at Lawyer's General Store
With all the election tension on the news and in the air, it feels like the perfect time to mention Lawyer's General Store, the East Durham shop with the benches marked "Democrat" and "Republican" on its front porch. The iconic benches are even displayed on their souvenir t-shirt:
Besides snagging a photo opp on the bench of your preferred political party, Lawyer's is worth a stop if you need some deli sandwiches, light groceries, basic toiletries, or gifts.
If you don't have time to hit Guaranteed Irish or the Irish Tea Shop, you can get a taste of the Irish Catskills here at Lawyer's, where they sell a solid selection of imported candy bars, condiments, crisps, and tea.
If you're entertaining the kids with a treasure hunt, Lawyer's is a jackpot. Besides the toys shown below, they've got a big selection of Melissa & Doug Water Wow! books -- reusable painting books that come with refillable watercolor pens. They're mess-free, and they're a must-have for little kids, especially if you're taking a long drive or need a quiet activity to take along to a restaurant.
Lawyer's also offers local honey and maple syrup, a whole armoire full of bajas (amazing!), and a selection of flip flops and water shoes, which are especially helpful if you're staying at Gavin's and want to check out the waterfall behind the resort or have plans to wade through another local creek.
If you're camping, they've got everything from tents to campfire-ready popcorn. They even have a poop emoji plush speaker that you can hook up to your iPod. (See upper left corner of photo below.) Something for everyone!
Lawyer's is often our first stop after a 2-and-a-half-hour drive from Brooklyn. Our kids are usually still in their pajamas, and it always feels great to climb out of our road-trip-ravaged car and into this tidy and homey store. No matter how rumpled we look, the staff always makes us feel warmly welcomed.
