Mansion + Reed: Best Coffee in Coxsackie
Mansion + Reed was already the Catskills general store of my dreams, and after a recent makeover, they now have an espresso machine. The owners, twin sisters Lia and Justine Post, pour the finest cup of cappuccino for miles around and they’ve also started serving a smooth and chocolatey blend of cold brew.
Their signature espresso drink, the Maple Cinnamon Latte, is made with No. Six Depot’s deep, dark espresso blend, a local shot of Maple Leaf Sugaring syrup from Ghent, NY, and a sprinkle of spicy Ceylon cinnamon, with your choice of oat milk or Ronnybrook Farm Creamline milk. It’s caffeine heaven, and when it gets too hot for a steamy latte, you can order it iced.
They’ve added coffee counter seating, and you can still sit in this little nook in the front of the shop, under the hex signs made by local artist Scott Chasse. It’s a good place to think about what you might pick up at Reed Street Bottle Shop across the street. On a Wednesdays in the summertime, you can grab coffee and wine on your way to the Coxsackie Farmers Market, our favorite farmers market in the Catskills.
Everything is so carefully curated at Mansion + Reed that even the toilet paper is cute. They’ve got fresh cookies and scones to enjoy with your coffee, plus all the essentials for stocking your fridge—local milk, eggs, pasture-raised meats, vegetables, bread, and cheese. Since their renovation, they’ve added ample shelving for their solid craft beer and cider selection. I was super excited to pick up some of my favorite West Kill Brewing cans.
They’re also carrying my favorite kitchen short-cut, Omsom meal start packets. I covered these fiery, aromatic flavor-bombs for Brooklyn Based and they really do make it quick and easy to bring bold Asian flavors to table, and they work well with tofu of your meat of choice.
Mansion + Reed also stocks a selection of organic Sfoglini Pasta in fun shapes and colors, all of which is made and boxed right here in Coxsackie! We took home a couple of boxes and they really elevated a simple pasta dinner on the deck.
I’ve been seeing tinned seafood in all the gourmet groceries in Brooklyn, and Mansion + Reed has all the good stuff (in great packaging), too. The shelf pictured above reminded me of our honeymoon (way back in 2006) when we spent an afternoon at Barcelona’s Quimet y Quimet, a 100-year-old wine bar that specializes in tapas made from tinned fish.
Every time I visit Mansion + Reed, I feel inspired to cook up something delicious and invite some friends over to enjoy it with us. And even though their selection echoes a Brooklyn gourmet grocery, the shop still has the warm, friendly feeling of a country store. The owners always chat with my kids, and the kids love to take our spare change and buy a few pieces of candy from the old-timey jars near the cash register. I’m already looking forward to our next visit.
Mansion + Reed is located at 45 Reed Street, Coxsackie, NY; (518) 616-9701. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am to 6pm. You can order online to get groceries for pick-up and see more of their selection on Instagram @mansion.reed.
