Don't Drain This Swamp: A Little Hike with Lots of Nature
Politics aside, can we agree that the phrase “Drain The Swamp” has really done a disservice to swamps? I’m sad about the deep political divides in our country right now, so let’s talk about something we can all agree to love: Nature. Did you know that swamps soak up excess storm-water like sponges? They can absorb impurities and harmful bacteria before they reach rivers and water supplies. Plus, they’re productive ecosystems that can support as much wildlife as a rain forest or coral reef — not to mention that swamps are strangely beautiful.
Just look at this weird, gurgling pool! It’s like a bubbly, burpy oasis of avocado green sesame seeds:
Welcome to Four-Mile Point Preserve, located right beside Vosburgh Swamp in the sweet little Hudson River town of Coxsackie. I’d guess that this place could be teeming with mosquitoes in mid-summer, but but on a bright, chilly fall day after lunch at the Cask and Rasher and apple-picking at Boehm Farm, there wasn’t a mosquito in sight.
It’s the ideal destination for anyone who wants maximum nature in minimal time. The walks are short, the views are incredible, and the swampy green waters look beautiful against the fiery autumn leaves. It’s worth noting that the wooden platform overlooking the marsh doesn’t have a railing on it (so you wouldn’t want a rambunctious toddler running up ahead on the short trails), but it’s the perfect little breath of nature for careful little kids.
The four mini-destinations on this hike are the marsh overlook, two Hudson River overlooks, and one picnic area with a handful of widely spaced tables on the banks of the Hudson. There’s a kayak or canoe launch point in the picnic area, too.
During our visit, there were a couple of dog-walkers out in the preserve and a few signs reminding us to wear masks if there were other people nearby. The kids are really good about wearing masks. I’m glad they’re so careful about safety, and I’m also sad that they have to be.
Anyway, my masked son, Archer, was excited to find a type of recycling bin he’d never seen before — one for used fishing line. He’s been camera-shy lately, but he quickly posed for this picture so could share his find with his amazing 4th grade teacher, who runs his school’s environmental club, The Green Team.
The picture don’t do it justice, but this Hudson River view was straight-up splendid. Four Mile Point Preserve is proof that you don’t need to gear up for a big hike to find a little forest magic.
Four-Mile Point Preserve is located at 169 4 Mile Point Rd, Coxsackie, NY. It’s free and open year-round, sunrise to sunset.
