Foreland: An Abandoned Catskill Mill Transforms into an Art Center
While eating ice cream on the creek in Catskill, artist and developer Stef Halmos laid her eyes on three giant buildings that were constructed in the mid-1800s and originally used to produce uniforms for Union Soldiers during the Civil War, and she saw a place where new life and new art could grow.
These three buildings, two of which are now connected by a floating glass pedestrian bridge, were empty for decades before Halmos re-imagined and revitalized them to house 30 artists' studios, three art galleries, two event spaces, and two eateries. I wrote about her project for the Times Union: Abandoned mills become massive new art space in Catskill.
It’s a super inspiring story, a truly exciting development for Catskill, and we can’t wait to visit in person!
