Meet the Brooklyn DoubleWide Team
This little blog is nearing its 5th birthday! I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been with us from the beginning and also introduce myself and my team to all our new readers out there.
Hello! I’m Kara Zuaro. I’m a freelance writer and mother of 2 based in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. I grew up on Long Island, I studied English and Film at the University of Notre Dame, and have been spending summer vacations at my family’s place in the Irish Catskills since I was a baby.
The title of the blog is kind of a misnomer: Brooklyn DoubleWide is not about Brooklyn! When I started, I thought I might write about Kings County and Greene County, but then I started working for Brooklyn Based and focused the blog on family adventures in the Catskills and Hudson Valley.
And since many of you have asked, YES, we DO live in a double-wide when we’re upstate. When we had to tear down my grandfather’s old double-wide trailer due to a collapsing roof, we were looking for new home to fit in its footprint. We wanted something affordable and energy-efficient that could fit as many people as possible, as this side of the family has grown into a 27-member crew. A custom-designed double-wide from Moore’s Homes fit the bill! It’s been a while since we packed the place with nieces and aunts and uncles and cousins, but our double-wide is a bunker that can sleep 20 at full capacity!
The core Brooklyn DoubleWide team includes my 6 1/2-year-old daughter, Ramona (editor of mischief, magic, and comic relief), my 10-year-old son, Archer (our in-house researcher and historian), and my husband, Pete (my driver, proofreader, local beer expert, and bff).
When I started this blog in April of 2017, Ramona was only 1 and Archer was only 5! It’s been almost 5 years since we shared the first photos of my grandfather’s old double-wide and offered a first look inside our current double-wide home.
Since then, the blog has been a labor of love, encouraging us to explore new places and introducing us to so many new friends. We’ve kept to ourselves for most of this pandemic year, but we’re looking forward to seeing more of our favorite people in the months and years to come.
Thank you for sticking with us!
