NOW CLOSED: Sundae Fun Day at 2 Twisted Ladies Ice Cream

Banana Cream Pie ice cream, smothered in fudge and marshmallow toppings from above and below. Whipped cream piled high, Snickers bites, a light sprinkling of chopped nuts. And of course, a cherry on top. At 2 Twisted Ladies in Greenville, an overabundance of ice cream flavors and an avalanche of toppings bring the magic to their giant and joyful sundaes.

With giant ice cream sculptures standing guard in the parking lot, oodles of polka dot decals dancing across on the facade, and a bright magenta front door, it's clear that the 2 Twisted Ladies are not interested in restraint. Inside, the neon polka dot curtains and ice cream cone sculptures hang over the windows and checkerboard linoleum lines the floors. If the brightly decorated walls could talk, they'd probably say, "It's time to let go and eat a waffle cone bigger than your head."

"It is really only one twisted lady, though. Just me," says co-owner Sandi Pecore. "Jess, my daughter, will tell you she is the other one." The ice cream parlor's name came from the owners' original logo image, two ladies' faces with their hair twisted together like ice cream. The logo didn't stick, but the name did.

When my 3-year-old daughter requested pink ice cream with M&M's and lots of sprinkles, the Twisted Ladies sprinkled on approximately half a jar. Their generosity was deeply appreciated.

My kids made a beeline for the handful of tall, rainbow-colored bar seats, where they could look in on the ice cream action, but there are enough lime green tables in the back to throw a party here. And parents of small children will appreciate that there is always a napkin at arm's length. The brilliant design includes napkin dispensers on every surface and also affixed to the walls, which something I should probably install at home.

My 6-year-old son, a lifelong fan of competitive eating, was enthralled by the shop's Beat the Beast challenge, which involves scarfing 16 scoops of ice cream, 10 different toppings, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry in 20 minutes. The winners wall was pretty male-dominated, but I was able to work in a little feminist teaching moment when he asked why Beast-conqueror Caroline from Medusa said, "I did this for all the women... another glass ceiling broken."

The Greenville shop serves about 50 flavors of Perry's Hard Ice Cream, plus a few soft serve flavors, over 20 different toppings, and a wide variety of cones. They make sundaes, splits, shakes, floats, and custom cakes, covering all of your ice cream needs.
