Hort and Pott: Handsome Handmade Goods, Plants and Antiques in Oak Hill
2023 NOTE: Hort & Pott has relocated to Greenville.
Hort and Pott, a new shop in an old Oak Hill barn, has exactly what you need to outfit your rustic Catskills retreat. Part plant nursery, part antique shop, part handmade home goods supplier, the highly curated barn feels a bit like stepping into Ernest Hemingway's Key West yard sale. If you need a vintage life preserver, an ocean-blue typewriter, or a rough-edged, 2-foot wooden eagle wall hanging, you've come to the right place. Even the plants are spiky, striking, and masculine. You're not going to find any dried lavender up in here.
Need a gift for the artistic man in your life? How about a cool nautical painting or a pipe-smoking garden gnome? Perhaps some JFK art or a vintage globe? Hort and Pott supplies the best selection of manly home goods I've ever seen.
Owner and artist Todd Carr sells his own handmade ceramic goods, including the large concrete leaves pictured above. A former Senior Gardening Editor at Martha Stewart Living, Todd also offers floral design services through the shop. His co-owner, Carter B. Harrington, works with found wood and built the shop's rustic-elegant display cabinet. This fall, they will be hosting a workshop series with courses in wood, concrete and floral design. (Details to come!)
I picked up a jade and carnelian bracelet, handmade by the owner of the AirBnB nextdoor, Catskill Creek Cottage, and we're already planning a return visit to pick up some pieces to add to our double-wide's old-meets-new decor.
Hort and Pott is located at 7829 NY-81, Oak Hill, NY. The shop's regular hours are 11am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, but Todd is often working in the building. If the flag is up, he's open for business. Follow Hort and Pott on Instagram and shop online via their Etsy shop.
