SOLD! The Best Bowling Alley in the Catskills
UPDATE: Sold and reopening as The Ark Bowl & BBQ!
Ever dream of moving to the Catskills and starting a new business and a new life? But, like, maybe you're not a chef or a future farmer or have any idea what you might do for a living? The gorgeous Margaretville Bowl could be calling your name. Though the photos look a little grainy and old-timey, this is a present-day look at the perfectly preserved mid-century modern bowling alley. These photos and more are posted in its listing on Timberland Properties.
With all the friends we know moving up to the Catskills, this beautiful bowling alley, listed at $259,000 seems ripe for the picking. But it's been on the market since 2012, when Julia Reischel of Watershed Post wrote:
"Walking into Margaretville Bowl is walking onto the set of Mad Men. The eight-lane alley opened in 1960 with brand-new pink-and-chrome Brunswick fittings throughout. Half a century later, the vintage ball returns, mechanical pin-setters, and lockers are still immaculate. It's a '60s time capsule, right down to the eight-foot-tall plywood bowling pin that rotates in the breeze on a pole outside."
According to its listing, Margaretville Bowl has been in continuous operation for over 50 years. The bowling alley's Facebook page says it's currently available for private parties. If you're planning a Catskills wedding, it seems like the perfect place for a retro rehearsal dinner.
We have friends in Margaretville and hope to explore the town this summer. For our city readers who aren't familiar with the area, its 15 minutes from the Belleayre Ski Mountain, and 30 minutes from the Phoenecia Diner. Anybody else dreaming a little bowling alley dream with me right now?
