Pilothouse Paper: Extra-Special Stationery & Great Little Gifts on Reed Street in Coxsackie
Pilothouse Paper, tucked into a nook of a storefront on picturesque Reed Street in Coxsackie, is the kind of place where you can find a really thoughtful gift without actually thinking too much about it. Here, proprietor Susan Baldaserini, also an owner of Reed Street Bottle Shop across the street, has done all the legwork for you.
Giftable (or keep-able) books, baby blankets, art supplies, candles, and tote bags are arranged in perfect piles on antique shelves and tables. The artistic card selection has a more-heartfelt-than-Hallmark greeting for every occasion, and the ribbon and wrap in stock is on point.
During my quick visit, Susan mentioned that she originally planned on renting the storefront (which is owned by the sisters behind Mansion and Reed) to use as an office space for her graphic design work. But then, the light was so perfect, and the space was just begging to be brought back to life. Adding some gifts and stationery didn't get in the way of her mini-office set-up, and the store feels like another important step toward the full revitalization of Reed Street.
Susan's eye for design is evident on every tabletop and in each carefully curated item for sale. I treated myself to some mermaid thank you notes, glinting with metallic gold, and a matchbox of geometric brass push pins to hang a vintage-inspired Catskills pennant over my bedroom door.
I'm planning another trip before the holidays because I can't imagine a better place to shop for practical-yet-beautiful grown-up stocking stuffers and those pretty little extras for the people who already have everything they need.
