Thanksgiving Turkey & A Hot Weekend Project
Have your ordered your Thanksgiving turkey yet? If you're planning to be in the Northern Catskills the weekend before Thanksgiving, you can pick up a fresh turkey from one of our favorite farms and grab some late-season produce for a long-weekend culinary project. Alternatively, you can party with live turkeys and make vegan friends in Saugerties. Read on, friends:
- Beautiful Heather Ridge Farm in Preston Hollow is still taking orders for Thanksgiving turkeys. If you're already onto the next holiday, they can also take a Christmas order, which they'll freeze and store for you. Get all the details on their Facebook page:
"Pre-order turkey stock, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, apple stuffing, oat dinner rolls and turkey brine mix, and make your dinner preparations easier! Prepared by chef Rob, and oh-so-tasty. You can have lunch at the cafe, shop for other meats and poultry, peruse gift ideas, and kick off your holiday festivities starting here."
- East Durham Farms (pictured above) also has a few turkeys left, and they're still taking orders by phone. You can reach them at (518) 239-4657 and get more info about their friendly farm on their website.
And if you're looking for a kitchen project this weekend, how about making some homemade hot sauce? The pepper selection at East Durham Farms inspired us:
- And for our vegetarian and vegan friends out there, Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties is hosting a Gobble & Groove dance party for people and live turkeys, featuring soul music and vegan fare. You can buy tickets here.
While you're at it, you can check out this collection of vegetarian Thanksgiving recipes from Crescent Dragonwagon in an article I wrote many Thanksgivings ago. These recipes really hold up, even in our omnivorous household! Seriously you just can't beat stuffing served in a pumpkin.
And you know, homemade hot sauce is naturally vegan...
Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for reading! If you've got another favorite spot to buy a holiday turkey in the Catskills, please let us know in the comments.
